Biomass technical session and forestry water workshop at NCASI Northern Regional Meeting

The NCASI Northern Regional Meeting will be held at the Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau, Wisconsin on May 18-19, 2011. The general session on the morning of May 18 will address highlights of regulatory and other developments of regional interest.

A technical session on SustainableProduction and Use of Forest Biomass will follow the general session and include presentations on topics such as EPA air regulations affecting biomass energy producers, Wisconsin’s biomass harvesting guidelines, and biodiversity responses to different levels of biomass “retention” during timber harvest. The biomass session will also include presentations and panel discussions on biomass supply/demand and opportunities to enhance the sustainability of Wisconsin’s forest sector through policy, innovation and investment.

On the morning of May 19, NCASI will offer a workshop that will review and provide a forum to discuss water quality issues and regulations affecting sustainable management of northern forests. Examples include state shoreline regulations, numeric water quality criteria for nutrients and other parameters, EPA’s General Permit program for certain pesticide applications, and a decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in NEDC v. Brown that logging roads are point sources subject to NPDES storm water permitting requirements of the Clean Water Act. Discussions will be moderated by Dr. George Ice, NCASI Fellow and manager of NCASI’s Forest Watershed Program.
