California Forests – focus on water

California Forests is a publication of the California Forestry Association. The Summer 2011 issue focuses on water and forest connections.

Dr. George Ice with NCASI contributed the paper “Forestry makes strides to protect water quality” in which he notes that “studies have shown that forestry conducted using today’s BMPs can reduce water quality impacts roughly 90 percent compared to forestry done before
standards were put into place.” He also describes research indicating that some water quality standards are unattainable, even for unmanaged forest watersheds. “Policymakers must be careful to set realistic, attainable standards lest they force landowners toward converting forest resources to non-forest uses or intensify forest health and wildfire risks.”
