AF&PA and a number of other pulp and paper industry associations from around the globe, working through the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA), jointly supported a project to develop international tools for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from pulp and paper mills. The group retained NCASI to review existing GHG inventory protocols and to develop calculation tools to assist companies in preparing GHG inventories. NCASI completed this work in 2002, and the tools were released by ICFPA late that year, in association with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI). In 2004, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol was updated by WRI and WBCSD. This required NCASI to make a number of minor changes to the tools to ensure that they were consistent with the new Protocol. In addition, NCASI took the opportunity to add or expand the guidance on a number of topics.

The calculation tools consist of two parts. The first is a report that describes the approaches for estimating greenhouse gas emissions from pulp and paper mills. The latest version of this report, Version 1.1, was released in July 2005 and is available for download below. The second part is an Excel® spreadsheet to aid in the calculations, containing default approaches and emission factors applicable to an international audience. The original version of the spreadsheet was released in December 2002. It was updated in August 2005 (Version 1.2a) to conform to the updated WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol, and again in late 2008 (Version 1.3) to conform to the 2006 revised IPCC guidelines for National GHG Inventories.
