Tools - Estimating Carbon Stored in Forest Products In-Use
Description
In recent years, much attention has been focused on carbon accounting for harvested wood products in the context of national greenhouse gas inventories. The methods used for national accounting, however, are not suitable for corporate or value chain accounting. At the request of the Climate Change Working Group of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA), NCASI has developed tools for this purpose. The method focuses on the long-term effects of current production on future stocks of carbon stored in forest products. It estimates the amount of carbon in products expected to remain in use for at least 100 years and, therefore, the method is called the 100-year method. This report explains the 100-year method and illustrates its use. An Excel® spreadsheet is available to assist in performing the calculations described in this report, along with an instruction manual.
