Special Report No. 06-07: Pulp and Paper Mill Emissions of SO2, NOx, and Particulate Matter in 2005

Sodium dioxide, nitrogen oxide and total filterable particulate emissions from US pulp and paper mills were estimated from a detailed industry-wide survey for calendar year 2005. Survey responses were obtained for 266 of 425 mills that operated in 2005, representing over 90% of the paper production and close to 100% of the wood pulp production. Survey responses covered about three-fourths of the existing boilers at pulp and paper mills, and the responses accounted for over 99% of the industry’s use of coal, wood residues, petroleum coke, tire-derived fuel, and sludge, over 90% of the residual fuel oil, and nearly 80% of the natural gas used in boilers and turbines.
