Special Report No. 85-06: Results of Laboratory Studies of Methods for Determining the Hydrogen Sulfide Reactivity Potential of Selected Paper Industry Waste Materials

Analysis procedures for the determination of the potential of sulfide-containing waste materials to release hydrogen sulfide upon contact with acidic substances were proposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in July of 1985. These procedures have been designed to (a) consider the neutralization capacity of a given basic material undergoing analysis, (b) be usable by semi-skilled analysts employing commonly available laboratory equipment, and (c) provide for rapid screening of waste material hydrogen sulphide release potential. National Council staff carried out a laboratory evaluation of aspects of these proposed methods, and the results of this evaluation are contained in the enclosed special report.
