Special Report No. 89-07: A Survey of the Pulp and Paper Industry Environmental Protection Expenditures – 1988

Based on a survey of the industry, capital expenditures for environmental protection at U.S. pulp and paper mills in 1988 were estimated to be $572 million, with 63% of the total being for air quality protection, 23% for water quality protection, and 14% for solid waste disposal. Total 1988 expenditures were 40% higher than those reported for 1987. Forecast environmental expenditures for 1989 are $1022 million. Spending for environmental protection in 1988 represented 11% of all U.S. pulp and paper 1988 capital expenditures.
