Special Report No. 95-13: A Survey of Pulp and Paper Environmental Protection Expenditures – 1994

Based on a survey of the industry, capital expenditures for environmental protection at U.S. pulp and paper mills in 1994 were estimated to be $0.72 billion, with 40% of the total being for water quality protection, 34% for air quality protection, and 26% for solid waste disposal. Total 1994 expenditures were essentially the same as in 1993. Forecast environmental expenditures for 1995 are about $0.8 billion. Spending for environmental protection in 1994 represented slightly over 14% of all U.S. pulp and paper 1994 capital expenditures.
