Special Report No. 97-11: A Survey of Pulp and Paper Industry Environmental Protection Expenditures – 1996

Based on a survey of the industry, capital expenditures for environmental protection at U.S. pulp and per mills in 1996 were estimated to be $0.74 billion, with 48% of the total being for water quality protection, 34% for air quality protection, and 19% for solid waste disposal. Total 1996 expenditures were almost 20% higher than those reported for 1995. Forecast environmental expenditures for 1997 are about $0.64 billion.
