Technical Bulletin No. 0010: Progress Report on the Analyses of Pulp Mill Gases (AQTB)

The attached bulletin summarizes the research work at the National Council’s Washington State University Atmospheric Pollution Project on methods for the collection and analyses of gaseous pulping emissions. A satisfactory method for drying moist gas streams prior to analyses has been developed. Silica gel has been found to be an excellent media for the collection of the various compounds present in kraft mill gases. Two techniques are described for the desorption and analyses of the collected compounds. The more direct procedure involves transfer of the silica gel adsorption column directly to the gas chromatograph t us eliminating the intermediate desorption and re-trapping steps. Field trials of the sampling and analytical techniques herein are now underway at several West Coast kraft mills.
