Technical Bulletin No. 0012: California Ambient Air Standards (APGB)

The California State Board of Health as recently established the first comprehensive state-wide standards for ambient air quality and has recommended that the California Legislature enact these standards into law. These were prepared at the request of the Legislature and are to be used as a basis for efforts to control or abate sources of atmospheric pollution. Standards have been set for a number of contaminants; sulfur dioxide and particulate matter are the only ones in the group 'which would apply to pulp and paper mills at this time. The standards are based on available research data and rather than being blanket emission requirements, are subdivided into three levels termed “adverse, "serious" and "emergency". Presumably the degree of control which will be required will be tailored to the individual case.
