Technical Bulletin No. 0013: A Manual for Adsorption Sampling and Gas Chromatographic Analysis of Kraft Mill Source Gases (AQTB)

The attached bulletin presents a detailed manual for sampling and chromatographic analysis of kraft mill gases. This method was developed by the National Council research project at Washington State University, under the direction of Mr. Donald Adams. The method is based upon the condensation and/or adsorption of the gaseous effluents on activated silica followed by desorption and subsequent gas-liquid chromatographic analysis. A period of 30 minutes to two hours is required to collect each sample, while the desorption and chromatographic analysis can be completed in two to three hours. During the past several months, the method has been field tested at a number of West Coast kraft mills using the Washington State University mobile laboratory. In addition to further testing the method, this work has been for the purpose of determining the effectiveness of various air pollution control equipment at these mills. The results obtained during the survey are currently being evaluated and will be presented in bulletin form at some future date.
