Technical Bulletin No. 0017: Identification of Non-Sulfur Organic Compounds in Stack Gases from Pulp Mills (AQTB)

The determination of various sulfur compounds emitted from kraft mill recovery furnace stacks has been the subject of considerable research by the National Council and others. The attached bulletin summarizes research at the National Council's University of Florida project on the identification of non-sulfurous organic compounds present in this effluent conducted in 1962. Qualitative identification of a number of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons was made, as well as tentative identification of vanillin. None of the compounds identified were found to have an odor with the exception of vanillin. It was concluded at that time that these compounds have little association with typical kraft mill odor.
