Technical Bulletin No. 0051: New Approaches to Particulate Collection at Bark Fired Power Boilers (AQTB)

The attached Technical Bulletin contains the prepared remarks of two discussion leaders who participated in a technical session on "Particulate Matter Measurement and Source Control at Power Boilers and Kraft Recovery Boilers" at the 1970 Southern Regional Meeting. The National Council acknowledges the contribution of all the participants in this technical session and is grateful to Richard Nachbar and A. E. Pearce of Westvaco Corporation and their company for permission to distribute their remarks. These papers describe dissimilar approaches to solution of a common problem at two mills within a company. They should be of special interest since they describe what is believed to be the initial installations of a precipitator for particulate removal from power boiler flue gas in one case and a technique for upgrading the particulate collection efficiency possible with mechanical collectors on a power boiler flue gas at the other. They also discuss the factors leading to equipment selection and performance data as well. The subject of particulate matter emission control at power boilers continues to receive attention in the National Council's program in special studies to evaluate the collection efficiency of various particulate source sampling techniques, determination of particle size and distribution in power boiler flue gas, and through distribution of information on application of control devices or procedures and their effectiveness as it becomes available.
