Technical Bulletin No. 0059: A Guide to the Use of Gas Chromatography in Emission Analysis (AQTB)

The attached technical bulletin draws on the experience gained to date in National Council, industry and federal agency studies of gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of chemical components of kraft mill atmospheric emissions. Based on that experience the National Council staff has assembled a guide to further applications of gas-liquid chromatography, calling attention to (a) sample collection and handling procedures, (b) key considerations in chromatographic column component selection, (c) major differences in applicable detectors, and (d) currently available calibration techniques. The bulletin also constitutes another chapter in the Compendium of Methods for Measuring Ambient Air Quality and Process Emissions which the National Council undertook to assemble several years ago. The technical bulletin notes finally that applications of gas-liquid chromatography to pulp mill atmospheric emission analysis are currently almost universally confined to special studies and non-routine studies. In such applications it affords a means of quantitative analysis for specific gaseous components of pulp, mill atmospheric emissions.
