Technical Bulletin No. 0075: Treatment of Calcium-organic Sludges Obtained from Lime Treatment of Kraft Pulp Mill Effluents Part II

The attached report is a continuation of Technical Bulletin No. 62, dealing with the treatment of kraft pulping effluents for color reduction. A method for dewatering the lime-organic sludge obtained from treatment of these effluents by re-carbonation was developed in the laboratory. Large scale mill tests of this process were made. These revealed that foaming of the organic matter dissolved from the sludge interfered with operation of the process. Research to overcome this difficulty is now under way in the laboratory of the Council’s Louisiana State University project. Results of this investigation will be reported in a future bulletin.
