Technical Bulletin No. 0120: Survey of Solids Removal Practices in Southern Kraft and Newsprint Mills

In 1959 the National Council first published Technical Bulletin No. 120, which summarized the results of a survey of suspended solids removal practices at Southern Kraft and newsprint mills, conducted under the direction of Herbert F. Berger, Southern Regional Engineer. The Technical Bulletin consisted of tabulated summary results collected during mill visitations, which showed that relatively short period sedimentation was capable of removing a larger bulk of the suspended matter from kraft effluents. The sludge so removed was generally disposed of on land after either being drained and allowed to partially dry or removed continually by collector mechanisms and discharged to land disposal areas. Such capital and operating costs as were available were included in the report. It is being reprinted so that the information contained therein will remain readily available for comparative purposes.
