Technical Bulletin No. 0134: Analysis of Neutral Sulfite Semi-chemical Pulp Bleaching Effluents

The attached Technical Bulletin summarizes analytical work on neutral sulfite semi-chemical bleachery effluents which was conducted at the National Council's Purdue University Project in 1959-60 under the direction of Professor Don E. Bloodgood, on the recommendation of the Neutral Sulfite Semi-Chemical Wastes Committee of the National Council. This investigation was preliminary to the search for methods for reducing the volume and treating these waste waters. It will be noted from the report that the major effluent load comes from the chlorination and caustic extraction stages, the hypochlorite stage wash water being relatively free of solids, oxygen demand, and color. It appeared that the latter was suitable for direct discharge so that subsequent investigations regarding treatment were confined to chlorination and caustic extract stage waters both alone and in combination with each other.
