Technical Bulletin No. 0148: Aquatic Biology and the Pulp and Paper Industry Report No. 1

The attached Technical Bulletin was prepared by Dr. Willis M. Van Horn, Biologist at the Institute of Paper Chemistry, and first distributed in September 1961. In its initial distribution it was noted that since the pulp, paper and paperboard industries are co-users of many surface waters with both commercial and sport fishing interests, one of the requirements which has faced the industry over the years is the maintenance of conditions not inimical to aquatic life in these waters. Great progress has continued to be made in this regard; particularly toward preventing fish kills through reducing the levels of biologically active components in mill effluents' and controlling dissolved oxygen levels in receiving waters. Problems now remaining deal mainly with maintaining a suitable environment for normal reproduction and growth of aquatic forms. The complexity of this problem is indicated by the increased research in this field by the pulp and paper industry in NCASI's Experimental Streams Program. The National Council has supplemented this earlier technical bulletin with Stream Improvement Technical Bulletin No. 251, “Aquatic Biology and the Pulp and Paper Industry (Report No. 2)" issued in October 1971 and three technical bulletins describing the experimental streams program findings. These are Technical Bulletins No. 290, 292 and 301. The initial technical bulletin in this series is, however, being kept in print since it provides a comprehensive summary of the state of knowledge in this area up through 1960.
