Technical Bulletin No. 0164: Disposal of Pulping Effluents by Land Disposal and Irrigation

When this technical bulletin was first issued in 1963 there was considerable interest in the practice of effluent disposal on land and as irrigation water. For two years the National Council's West Coast Regional Center had studied the fundamentals of these procedures. The attached National Council bulletin brought together the results of these studies. Contained in this bulletin was an evaluation of the factors involved in most effective land application, as well as a detailed study of the purification occurring in wastes on leaching through the soil. The elution rates of effluent constituents adsorbed in soil so treated, were also explored and reported. The importance and beneficial role of cover vegetation, as well as the effect of irrigation with pulp mill effluents on crop yields, were established for soils having different characteristics.
