Technical Bulletin No. 0177: Color Removal and BOD Reduction in Kraft Effluents by Foam Separation

In 1963, growing interest in a new wastewater renovation unit process named "foam separation" prompted the National Council to investigate its possible application to treatment of kraft mill wastes. In this process a liquid, containing dissolved or highly dispersed organic matter, is foamed by aeration with the addition of surface active agents. Some organics have a tendency to leave the body of the liquid in the foam which can then be collected and collapsed. Hence, the impurities would be removed from the large body of the liquid and concentrated in a small volume less costly to dispose of.
