Technical Bulletin No. 0198: Continuous Monitoring of Kraft Mill Stack Gases with a Process Gas Chromatograph

Efforts by National Council researchers and others pointed out the usefulness of continuous analysis of recovery furnace stack gas for certain sulfur components, relative to controlling furnace operation to reduce undesirable emissions. Gas chromatography was then developed to a point where it appeared applicable for this purpose and an instrument capable of achieving such analyses was developed by instrument manufacturers. The first such installation was made at the Camas mill of Crown Zellerbach Corporation and results of its operation were presented at the National Council's West Coast regional meeting by Dr. Herman R. Amberg, Manager of Chemical and Biological Research of the Research Department of that company. The attached technical bulletin, number 198, is the paper from which this presentation was made.
