Technical Bulletin No. 0464: Selected Experience with Sludge Accumulation in Aerated Stabilization Basins

This bulletin describes the extent of sludge deposition in twelve aerated stabilization basin systems which provide hydraulic residence times of 3.5 days to 24 days in single unit or series operated basins. Energy levels fur oxygen supply and mixing ranged from 3 horsepower per million gallons of basin volume to 23 horsepower per million gallons. The organic loading to the ASB's ranged from less than 100 lbs biochemical oxygen demand for five days applied per day per million gallons to 1000 lbs; no data were available on single unit aerated basins which receive 400 to 800 lbs of biochemical oxygen demand for five days applied per day per million gallons.
