Technical Bulletin No. 0668: Characterization of Non-Conventional Pollutant Variability in Biologically Treated Pulp Mill Effluent

The variability of biologically treated pulp mill effluent discharges was evaluated using color, COD and AOX measurement data from thirty facilities. Maximum daily and maximum monthly variability factors (VF) were calculated using the empirically based non-parametric approach and distribution modeling techniques. Maximum daily VFS calculated using the distribution modeling approach were not significantly different than those determined empirically and thus, the variability of color, COD or AOX can be adequately characterized in this manner provided sufficient numbers of facilities are examined; i.
