Technical Bulletin No. 0670: The Effects of Recovered Fiber Reuse on Raw and Final Effluent BOD,TSS, AND COD Loads from Unbleached Kraft and Semi-chemical Mills

In order to document the effects of OCC use on effluent loads, NCASI collected information from twenty-eight (28) unbleached kraft and semi-chemical pulping mills. The unbleached kraft mills contributing data to this study used OCC to provide from zero (0) to thirty-nine (39) percent of the mill furnish while the semi-chemical mills used from two (2) to seventy-five (75) percent OCC. Across these ranges, NCASI’s analysis revealed no statistically significant relationship between raw or final waste loads of BOD, TSS, or COD and the fraction of OCC in mill furnish.
