Technical Bulletin No. 0824: Evaluation of Food Simulating Liquids for Paperboard Food Packaging

Migration of chemicals from food packaging can be estimated using procedures recommended by FDA which include measuring the migration of the substances into food simulating liquids (FSLs). The FDA procedures and recommendations have been based primarily on studies using plastic packaging. Because the migration behavior from paperboard may be significantly different than that from plastics, the use of liquids to simulate food in determining the level of migration of food contact substances from paperboard packaging was investigated.
