Bioassays and Whole Effluent Toxicity Testing

As part of its member support activity, NCASI staff assist mills with diagnosing and addressing situations in which whole effluent toxicity (WET) tests fail to meet NPDES permit requirements.  This sometimes includes split sample testing in NCASI’s bioassay laboratory in Newberry, Florida.  While bioassay issues may be due to constituents in treated effluents, it is not uncommon that matters related to the execution of the bioassay can be responsible for a negative test outcome.  To assist members with the task of auditing often complex bioassay reports, NCASI offers several resources to facilitate auditing of contract laboratory bioassay reports, covering acute and chronic methods for both US and Canadian tests.
